Colorado Gold - Territorial

The early relationship of Clark, Gruber with the surrounding Denver community shows many parallels with the early history of Nevada, whose fabled Comstock Lode discovery in 1859 would lead, by 1870, to the opening of the Carson City Mint.

In both instances, rich strikes -- mostly of gold in Colorado, mixed silver and gold in Nevada's Comstock region -- would rapidly lead to the requirement for improved forms of trade beyond barter or unassayed precious metals. But there was a crucial difference.

In 1860 Clark, Gruber filled the need privately in a remote area of what is today the state of Colorado, at a time when the area had essentially zero political influence.

The 1870 opening of the Carson City Mint was in a region that had achieved statehood six years previously, and amassed considerable wealth along the way; yet even then, there were numerous detractors from varying factions with agendas of their own.

The 1861-dated Clark, Gruber coinage represents the final year for the illustrious firm's products, aside from the 1862 ingots. PCGS population of only 4 with 2 higher.
