The New Orleans Mint struck coins from 1838 to 1861 and from 1879 to 1909. Falling under the control of the Confederacy in 1861 and closed after the Civil War, the New Orleans Mint reopened in 1879 to strike large amounts of silver to support the mining interests in the West. These substantial mintages, however, saw limited usage and wound up stored in the New Orleans vault by the millions. Fortunately, a number of dates, which were thought to be rare by numismatists for many years, were in fact plentiful, offering newly interested collectors and avid historians a plentiful opportunity to own a coin minted in the historic city of New Orleans.

A mintage of 5,708,00, the 1881-O Morgan Dollar often comes with surface abrasions and a hit or miss strike, making them quite available in Mint State grades through 65.

This 1881-O, however, is one of only the few dozen at 66 level because of its good strike, pretty cartwheel luster, and satiny mint silver surfaces.

PCGS has only graded 8 higher (all 66+) but at a price tag of 4x this Superb Gem.
