Very Rare Choice Unc.

The 1884-S is collectible in circulated condition but exceedingly rare in Uncirculated grades. Although the  San Francisco Mint facility accomplished a mintage of 3.2 million coins, unlike previous years, it appears most 1884-S dollars were released into circulation rather than being held in storage vaults.

It’s possible some unknown quantity was melted under the terms of the Pittman Act of 1918, but the issue's role in western commerce is unquestionable.

The certified population speaks to the widespread use of 1884-S dollars during the late 19th century.

The most frequently awarded grades at PCGS range from XF40 to AU58, and the certification figures decline rapidly in higher grades.

Uncirculated coins are typically seen in MS61 and MS62, while Select representatives are very scarce. Anything finer is a significant rarity.

*This example is sharp, clean and attractive. Only 19 have been graded higher by PCGS.

Listed at $54,400 in the CDN CPG, $55,000 in the PCGS price guide and $50,000 in Trends.
