Contracts between mine owners and railroad magnates made shipping raw bullion from the Comstock Lode to the S.F. Mint for coinage cheaper than transporting it to the much closer Carson City Mint in 1879.

As a result, silver deposits were small at the C.C. facility and only 756,000 dollars were struck there that year.

Some coins were released into circulation at the time of issue, while others were held in government vaults for later release.

Many of those in government storage were probably melted under the provisions of the Pittman Act in 1918. By the time of the GSA sales of the 1970s, only 4,123 examples were left for dispersal.

Today, the 1879-CC is the second-rarest Carson City Morgan. Examples with P.L. surfaces are especially elusive.

This one is nicely frosted and exhibits excellent eye-appeal.

The PCGS population is a mere 10 with 2 higher, each of the latter, an MS65+.
