Among 20th century U.S. gold coins, no group is more celebrated than the later collectible dates in the Saint-Gaudens $20 series, from 1929-1932.

They were produced in ample numbers, but the supply in numismatic hands has always been tiny, as the great majority were never released from storage in Mint vaults. When Franklin Roosevelt took the country off the gold standard and called in domestic holdings of gold via executive order in 1933, almost the entire production of these dates was quickly removed from the storage facilities.

They were later melted into gold ingots and stored in the Fort Knox Bullion Repository. The 1931 saw a mintage of 2.9 million pieces, but very few were released before the Gold Recall took effect.

Mint records suggest that only 45 coins were actually released through official channels. It’s believed that only about 110 coins survive today in all grades.

Listed in MS64 at $96,800 in the CDN CPG and $97,500 in Trends. And listed at $82,500 in the PCGS price guide in MS64+.
