A small mintage of 19,250 Paquet Reverse double eagles was struck at the San Francisco Mint early in 1861, followed by a more substantial production of 768,000 Liberty twenties with the regular reverse.

The Paquet Reverse double eagles are rare in all grades today, while the regular reverse examples are seen frequently in lower circulated grades, but Mint State examples are rare.

The supply of regular reverse 1861-S double eagles was augmented by about 100 pieces when the treasure of the S.S. Republic was recovered, and another 43 examples were found aboard the S.S. Brother Jonathan.

However, most of the shipwreck coins graded no better than AU. The PCGS population stands at just 24 with 8 graded higher.
